Get a $6,000 per year scholarship with Monash Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Scholars Programs

If you’re a high achieving student who wants to put your talents to use making the world a better place, Monash Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has two scholars programs just for you.

As the name suggests, the Faculty has undergraduate courses in two areas: pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences (more on the degrees below). Each has an associated a Scholars Program, which covers the same material, but also offers domestic students:

→ Exclusive invitations to the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences seminar series (otherwise reserved for staff and PhD students)
→ An invitation to an annual Dean’s function
→ A $6,000 per year scholarship (Domestic students only)

The Pharmaceutical Science Scholars Program

The Pharmaceutical Science Scholars Program is a stream of the four-year Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science Advanced with Honours degree.

Pharmaceutical Science is distinguished from other science degrees by its tight focus: it’s all about equipping you with the skills to design and develop new medicines.

That means you get a lot of time in the lab, working with exactly the same machines you’d use if you were doing biomedical research at a pharmaceutical company or in a research institute.

You’ll study units from three broad areas:

→ Drug Discovery Biology, which focuses on the biomedical science and pharmacology of drug discovery;
→ Medicinal Chemistry, which explores the development of potential pharmaceutical compounds from conception to their clinical use; or
→ Formulation Science, which enables you to understand how medicines are absorbed and travel around the body to their site of action.

The third year of the degree includes the options of an extended placement in one of Monash Parkville’s world-class pharmaceutical research groups, which will give you the skills to conduct an independent research project in your final year.

The Pharmacy Scholars Program

The Pharmacy Scholars Program is a stream of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons)/ Master of Pharmacy, Australia’s first – and  only – integrated Bachelor and Master of Pharmacy.

It means Monash graduates go out into the workforce equipped with qualifications a cut above their graduating peers.

The pathway to registration as a pharmacist in Australia generally takes five years. Traditionally, this involves a four-year bachelor degree plus a one-year internship. At Monash, the program takes  five years but you’ll graduate with a master as well as a bachelor degree.

Monash treats you as a pharmacist in training from day one. From the very beginning, Monash goes beyond teaching just the underlying scientific disciplines – chemistry, biology, pharmacology and so on. Monash also focuses on the key skills that make the difference between a good pharmacist and a great one, refining your skills in communication, problem solving and teamwork.

You’ll also undertake work placements in community pharmacies, hospitals, and other environments, practicing your new skills while learning from some of Australia’s best pharmacists in areas such as primary health care, medicines information, and patient-focused pharmacy services.

How to apply

Although the Monash Course codes are the same for both the standard and the scholars variants of each course, the VTAC codes differ.

This means that if you want to ensure you’ll be considered for the standard variant of the course even if you don’t quite get the mark required for the scholars program, you’ll need to list both variants as preferences in VTAC.
