Sometimes, uni can feel like a real drag. A burden. But in reality, the uni lifestyle has many perks. If you’re a current university student, here are some reasons to really make the most of your time at university.

1. The lifestyle won’t last forever.

This isn’t to say that the uni lifestyle is easy. In fact, far from it. Trust us: we’re well-versed in the early lecture starts, the draining labs, the rule that seems to mandate that all assignments are due at the same time, and so on.

But uni also comes with some freedoms. For example, most students have at least some control over their timetables. You can largely come and go as you please. You might be able to work part-time on the side.

When you start working full-time, you won’t have these same scenarios. Instead, you might slug it out at an office job from 9-5 every day. This isn’t inherently better or worse, or easier or harder. But the uni lifestyle won’t last forever, and it’s best to try to enjoy it as much as possible whilst you can. 👊

2. So many opportunities.

Being a student at a tertiary institution comes with many chances to grow as a person, to develop your skill set, and to get involved in initiatives you otherwise wouldn’t. From work, to clubs and societies, to volunteering, there are countless opportunities to extend yourself.

Your university should be able to help you with specific opportunities available to you. However, if you’re looking for a place to start, this thread might be a good fit. We’re trying to pool together a list of opportunities across all universities. So if you know of something that hasn’t yet been listed, please make a post and add to the list!

3. Heaps of things to explore.

Some university campuses are really huge, and there’s so much to explore. It’s very likely there are facilities you’ve never even heard of, or haven’t yet come across.

Why not take the time one day to get up and explore what’s around you? Who knows? It might lead to something really great. Remember: you won’t have this opportunity forever, and it would suck to miss out on something really suited to you simply because you weren’t aware of it at the time. And that leads us to our final point:

4. NO RAGRETS.

Think about getting to the end of your degree, and thinking, “to be honest, I just sort of floated through that”. For many students, the most rewarding part of university life isn’t going to classes, or doing assignments, but all of the other things that make up the university experience.

You don’t want to get to the end of your uni life and, on reflection, see that your time at uni was like a “shell” of what you actually wanted your university experience to be like. Try to put yourself out there, reach out to others, and enjoy uni life whilst you can. ✌️
