Overview

This course gives you the core laboratory and science skills required for a range of professional roles or for advanced standing pathway into a bachelor degree. A large component of this course is hands-on, and includes a number of specialised simulated workplace laboratories.

Throughout this course, you will develop a broad range of skills in chemical and biological laboratory techniques, commonly used in biomedical laboratories.

You will learn to isolate, purify, amplify and characterise DNA, and perform tasks such as tissue culture, electrophoresis and other laboratory skills associated with biomedical sciences.

Additionally, you will undertake 80 hours of professional practice where you will tackle a relevant workplace project or task.

This course may also provide you with a pathway into a range of science-related bachelor degrees with advanced standing (credit).

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in English other than EAL or at least 25 in English as an Additional Language (EAL); Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in any Mathematics.

Non-Year 12 prerequisites

Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.

Anatomy and Physiology, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Genetics, Health and nutrition, Microbiology, Molecular biology.

Potential Career Outcomes

This qualification leads to careers that include technical roles in biological research, biotechnology, diagnostics, medical research, pathology or veterinary laboratories.
