The Advanced Biomedical Sciences (Honours) degree is an advanced AQF8, research-focused undergraduate degree aiming to attract high-ATAR students with an interest in Biomedical Science Research. Students will commence the four-year (800 credit) degree with a common first year, comprising the Faculty’s Inter-Professional First year units supplemented by discipline-specific units. Research skills will be developed through integration of extended subject content into existing units, and through participation in extracurricular activities (Advanced Biomedical Science Club, journal club etc.). Students will select their course major – either Discovery Bioscience or Clinical Medical Science – during enrolment into 2nd year, based on their first year experiences across multiple disciplines, and guidance from course advisors. Core research units in 2nd and 3rd year will provide a scaffolded progression of research skills (including experimental design, ethics, statistical analysis, scientific writing, data management and critical interpretation). Project units undertaken in 3rd year will provide guided practical experience in biomedical research, and are well suited to capitalize on research expertise across the Faculty. In addition, established local industry relationships and research collaborations will ensure strong industry engagement in these projects. The foundation training and extracurricular networking obtained over the first 3 years of the course will prepare students for success in the independent 4th year research project. This full-year project will provide an opportunity for students to complete their research training at an approved university, research institute or industry research site, either domestic or international.
