The Bachelor of Applied Geographical Information Systems will give students the skills to support change and growth in some of the most important areas of modern society. It appeals to applicants who enjoy computing, graphics, and digital mapping. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) is a computer-based system capable of integrating, editing, sharing, modelling, and displaying geographically referenced information. It allows users to create interactive queries, analyse the information, edit data, create maps, and present the results of these operations.
On completion of this degree students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the nature of GIS, its historical development, capacity, advantages, and disadvantages. Capture spatial information using a range of data capture techniques, validate and document information and integrate it into a spatially related database and be able to analyse relationships between spatial and aspatial entities and a range of cartographic and statistical techniques; and communicate this information using a variety of digital and analogue techniques.
This degree prepares graduates for employment as specialists who know how to use highly sophisticated systems. Potential occupations may include analyst, data coordinator and spatial information officer; potential employers may include government agencies, regional development centres and agriculture and horticultural centres.
