Overview

Psychology explores the science of the mind and human nature. You will examine mental states and processes and how they affect human behaviour.

You'll gain strong theoretical and practical skills. The course is the basis for further study if you want to become a practising psychologist or use your study in other careers.

Your studies will include the biological bases of behaviour including brain behaviour relationships, sensation, perception and consciousness, theories of learning, memory and cognition emotion, motivation and stress.

At third year the course includes psychological assessment, personality and psychopathology. Third year also provides the option to work on a staff-initiated research project or complete a minimum 120 hour industry placement. 

The psychology component of the degree is 75% of first year and 87.5% of second and third year.

Elective subjects are unrestricted. Many courses are available in online format. 

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL; Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in one of Geography, any Mathematics or any Science; Units 1 to 4: satisfactory completion in two units (any study combination) of Maths: General Mathematics, Maths: Further Mathematics, Maths: Mathematical Methods or Maths: Specialist Mathematics.

Non-Year 12 prerequisites

Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.

Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Environmental Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Organisational Psychology, Philosophy and Methodology, Professional Practices, Psychological Assessment and Psychopathology, Research Methods, Social Psychology.

The type of careers this qualification leads to may include organisational management, health counsellor, sport/personal trainer, cross-cultural studies, counselling, human resources, working with people with disabilities, market research.
