Overview

How are works of art and visual culture made? Who makes them? When were they made? How were they used? Who used them? Art history examines creativity through the ages and how it has informed our beliefs, values, and social commentary on ethnicity, gender and class.

What will you do?

Our Bachelor of Arts (Art History and Visual Culture) has a strong focus on teamwork, collaboration, and industry internships. Prepare to study in the heart of Adelaide's art and cultural precinct, surrounded by the Art Gallery of South Australia, South Australian Museum and Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute.

You will:

  • analyse and interpret images and objects from the past and present
  • study principal methods of art from the Italian Renaissance, Northern Renaissance and contemporary eras
  • learn to use and apply digital technologies
  • curate online exhibitions of old and new works of art
  • develop specialist research, writing and communication skills
  • have exclusive access to collections at the Art Gallery of South Australia
In addition to art history and visual culture, our Bachelor of Arts program allows you to explore other interests by taking a minor (or another major) in a different discipline area. You can choose elective courses from the broadest range of study areas in the Arts in South Australia.

Where could it take you?

You could be a museum administrator, an archivist, or cultural director. You might pursue history teaching, helping others understand Basquiat and Boyd. Perhaps you'll curate exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Australia, Mona, or the Museum of Modern Art.
