Overview

Want to set yourself up for international achievement?

China is the world's second-largest economy and a crucial partner in Australia's economic success. Nearly 20% of our global population speaks their official language. In a fast-changing world, mastering Mandarin will only open doors.

What will you do?

Our Bachelor of Arts (Chinese Studies) has a strong focus on teamwork, collaboration, and industry internships. You will:

  • learn to speak, read and write in Chinese
  • develop an understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture
  • study Chinese influence in modern society
  • improve your knowledge of how language works
  • take complimentary courses on Chinese and Asian cultures
  • have the opportunity to study abroad
The University of Adelaide has student exchange links with top Chinese universities, a close partnership with Shandong University, and a Confucius Institute that offers special scholarship opportunities for studying in China. We also have a summer school in Jinan that provides intensive Chinese language instruction with credit towards your degree.

In addition to this, the Bachelor of Arts program allows you to explore other interests by taking a minor (or another major) in a different discipline area. You can choose elective courses from the broadest range of study areas in the Arts in South Australia.

Where could it take you?

You could be an immigration specialist, a social worker, a public servant, or a communications consultant. You might pursue international business, helping companies with communication and cultural understanding. Perhaps you're interested in translation, tourism, or teaching.
