Overview

How does the language of cinema differ from other forms of storytelling? How can films challenge or reinforce societal norms and expectations? What is it that we are deliberately remembering, and forgetting, in historical films? Film Studies delves into the complexities of film as both an art form and social phenomenon, illuminating how it influences individuals, society and culture.

What will you do?

Our Bachelor of Arts (Film Studies) has a strong focus on teamwork, collaboration, and industry internships. You will:

  • learn about the history of film
  • explore a range of theoretical, historical and critical approaches to film
  • understand what factors make a film a classic
  • examine film adaptations of literary works
  • analyse how films reflect conflict and tension within contemporary culture
  • discuss origins, techniques, genre, narrative, audience, and the film industry
Our contemporary learning program gives a global perspective and offers many opportunities to study overseas on exchange or study tours, allowing you to add international experience to your resume. Our courses are taught by globally-renowned academics with deep expertise and connections, putting you at the forefront of new knowledge.

In addition to Film Studies, our Bachelor of Arts program allows you to explore other interests by taking a minor (or another major) in a different discipline area. You can choose elective courses from the broadest range of study areas in the Arts in South Australia.

Where could it take you?

You could organise film festivals, take up screenwriting, or become a publicist in the industry. You might be a film critic, writing reviews for newspapers, magazines, and online publications. Perhaps you'll design out-of-this-world sets, restore historical films as an archivist, or produce your own documentaries.
