Overview

How does gender operate in society? What social and cultural factors shape how we view it? By exploring issues such as discrimination, inequity, and violence, gender studies seeks to promote social justice and challenge traditional gender norms and stereotypes.

What will you do?

Our Bachelor of Arts (Gender Studies) has a strong focus on teamwork, collaboration, and community internships. You will:

  • analyse how gender shapes society and affects people's lives
  • investigate the impact of other social identities such as sexuality, race, ethnicity, citizenship, social class, age, and ability
  • explore how power, privilege, and inequality intersect with gender
  • develop critical thinking skills to promote social change
  • apply your knowledge to address a contemporary issue of inequality 'of your choosing' on a local, national, or international level
In addition to Gender Studies, our Bachelor of Arts program allows you to explore other interests by taking a minor (or another major) in a different discipline area. You can choose elective courses from the broadest range of study areas in the Arts in South Australia.

Where could it take you?

Gender studies is a vital discipline that can help you become a qualified and valuable member of the workforce. You might be a policy officer, a human rights advocate, or the manager of a nonprofit. You could pursue a career in human resources. Perhaps you'll be a social worker, a public health educator, or a community organiser.
