Overview

Employers in both the public and private sectors need people who can research, write, edit and publish a wide range of materials. This major will give you skills and knowledge in many genres and styles of writing, and help you to develop the creativity and ethical understanding you need for successful workplace writing. Throughout the major you will be prepared for professional writing through learning to produce feature articles, speeches, reports, discussion papers, website content, creative non-fiction, media releases and many other forms of communication. You will cover copyright, censorship, plagiarism and the ethics of writing in the public domain.

Potential Career Outcomes

There are opportunities for employment in arts media (writing for theatres, museums, galleries), in corporate writing and editing for business, government departments, and in overseas aid, health and environmental organisations. Some graduates choose to work in mainstream media organisations, others establish themselves as freelance writers and consultants.
