Overview

Do you want to broaden your horizons, challenge the status quo, and confront the harsh realities of colonialism in Australia? This degree is your passport to exploring Indigenous knowledges, values, and ways of life. It celebrates Aboriginal resilience and supports the recognition of First Nations land rights and sovereignty.

What will you do?

Our Bachelor of Arts (Indigenous Knowledges and Society) has a strong focus on teamwork, collaboration, and community internships. You will:

  • study Indigenous perspectives on culture, language, the environment, history and politics
  • understand the importance of First Nations knowledge systems in a changing world
  • learn directly from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including Elder representatives through guest lectures
  • take classes within walking distance of key Kaurna country sites, such as the cultural trail along the River Torrens and Tandanya
You can also apply and further develop your knowledge of Indigenous perspectives and cultural protocols through a work-integrated placement within an organisation in the Indigenous sector.

In addition to Indigenous Knowledges and Society, our Bachelor of Arts program allows you to explore other interests by taking a minor (or another major) in a different discipline area. You can choose elective courses from the broadest range of study areas in the Arts in South Australia.

Where could it take you?

You could be a policy advisor, an education specialist, or an Indigenous community development officer. You might pursue a career in media, advocacy or youth work. Perhaps you'll curate cultural events, showcasing First Nations talent from across the country.
