Overview

Linguistics is the study of human language, its nature, origins, evolution, and uses. How does language affect the way we see the world? How does it reflect our social and cultural identities? By studying linguistics, you can unlock the mysteries of human communication and gain insight into the diversity and complexity of cultures around the world.

What will you do?

Our Bachelor of Arts (Linguistics) has a strong focus on teamwork, collaboration, and industry internships. You will:

  • become more aware of how languages are used, learned, and changed over time
  • understand how different languages interact with each other
  • investigate how they vary according to context
  • see how linguistics assists in language learning and teaching
  • study Australia's Indigenous languages and their place within Australian society
  • learn about language revival across the globe
In addition to linguistics, our Bachelor of Arts program allows you to explore other interests by taking a minor (or another major) in a different discipline area. You can choose elective courses from the broadest range of study areas in the Arts in South Australia.

Where could it take you?

You could work at an Aboriginal language centre in Australia or revive lost languages as a researcher. You might be the next Tolkien, writing epic novels and constructing fantasy dialects. Perhaps you'll pursue a career in translation, speech therapy, editing, or anthropology.
