Overview

Are you interested in studying overseas, learning languages and gaining the intercultural skills required to work in diverse contexts both in Australia and internationally? At UTS you can combine up to 30 professional degrees with a Bachelor of International Studies that will allow you to do just that.

Our combined International Studies degrees enable you to learn a language (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese or Spanish), deepen your understanding of your chosen major’s history and culture, develop intercultural communication skills, and provide you the opportunity to study abroad and/or undertake an internship at an international organisation.

You will choose one of the following three options:

1. Language, culture and the professional world: includes an internship and option of a short study abroad experience (2-6 weeks) overseas.

2. Language, culture and global exchange: includes an internship and a 6-month global exchange at any UTS partner university.

3. International Honours: includes a full year at a relevant overseas partner university where you will complete an honours-level research project. You will undertake this 'embedded' International Honours in your fourth or final year of your degree, and graduate at the same time as your peers who are enrolled in the first two options.

Please note:

  • You are required to meet living costs while overseas for all options. Living costs in some countries are higher than in Sydney.
  • Entry into International Honours will depend on you maintaining a credit-level average (or higher results) in both your International Studies and professional degree subjects during the first three years of your degree and on availability of placements in particular majors. If you are admitted into the honours degree you will receive a contribution of up to $1500 towards your travel costs.
  • If you are applying for a combined degree with International Studies (including if you are a current UTS student), please note that the International Honours year overseas will only be available from 2025 onwards. Students considering applying for recognition of prior learning should note that their pattern of enrolment for the degree may be affected.

Leading employers value people with strong communication skills and those who can work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Combining your professional degree with International Studies means you achieve two qualifications and develop the much sought-after intercultural communication skills to successfully operate in diverse professional contexts in Australia and internationally.
