Overview

The Bachelor of Criminal Justice equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to the welfare and safety of the community. The course prepares students for careers in youth justice, corrections or law enforcement and empowers them to become agents of change within the criminal justice system. It also provides students with knowledge of the relationships between social welfare, law, correctional institutions, community and policing while also emphasizing a holistic approach to community justice. Students develop an understanding of the systemic challenges within the criminal justice system and the factors that contribute to individuals interactions with the legal system, including mental health, drug use and childhood trauma. The course also covers topics such as criminal justice systems, ethics, alternative approaches and the law. In the final year, students undertake a key industry placement to ensure they graduate with confidence and readiness for the workforce.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English as an Additional Language (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL.

Majors

Criminal justice.

Potential Career Outcomes

When students graduate, they will be qualified to seek employment in the criminal justice system, which is increasingly becoming professionalised and requiring graduates with a broad knowledge of justice in a range of professional and community settings. Graduates can also seek employment in community legal settings, law firms, security and intelligence organisations and related welfare and support agencies.
