Overview

The Bachelor of Criminology will appeal to applicants who have the goal of completing an Honours year Criminology. Criminology explores the causes of crime and solutions to address its impact on people and infrastructures, and minimise the social and psychological harms it can cause. This degree provides an appreciation of the ways that ethical behaviour improves justice outcomes; and an understanding of concepts central to the structure and functioning of a just society, such as rights, laws, freedom, power and rules.

This course aims to provide a broad understanding of criminological theory and its application in criminal justice contexts and the skill of applying criminological knowledge in educational and professional settings. This degree provides an appreciation of the ways that ethical behaviour improves justice outcomes; and an understanding of concepts central to the structure and functioning of a just society, such as rights, laws, freedom, power and rules.

On completion of the degree students will be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of both classic and contemporary criminological theories; and an understanding of the ways that criminal justice systems function to deliver justice both in Australia and abroad. Students will have the ability to apply criminological knowledge in educational and professional settings and an appreciation of the ways that ethical behaviour improves justice outcomes.

This degree prepares graduates for a career in a range operational services associated with criminal justice systems. Potential occupations may include advocacy officer, youth justice case manager and community corrections officer; potential employers may include private security, intelligence services and court administrations.

Combining degrees enables students to follow their interests and aspirations and enhance their career prospects by undertaking a second area of study in addition to their primary degree. Completing an approved combined degree option will normally add at least one extra year (full-time equivalent) to their studies. For example, students combining two three-year full-time equivalent degrees are normally able to complete both degrees in four years of full-time equivalent study.
