Overview

This course focuses on contemporary approaches to teaching and learning in primary and special education settings.

Subjects centre on literacy and numeracy, an appreciation of diversity, an understanding of modern schooling and disability services, evidence-based decision making and reflective practice.

Students study discipline-specific curriculum, pedagogical studies, general education studies, and professional experience. A feature of this course is the integration of discipline knowledge with the curriculum and pedagogical knowledge needed to teach children with additional learning and physical needs.

Students can graduate with a primary teaching specialisation in either English/literacy or Mathematics/numeracy.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 1 and 2: satisfactory completion in two units (any study combination) of Maths: General Mathematics, Maths: Mathematical Methods or Maths: Specialist Mathematics or Units 3 and 4: any Mathematics; Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL.

Non-Year 12 prerequisites

Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.

Potential Career Outcomes

Graduates can work as mainstream and/or special needs teachers and teach in primary schools as well as disability settings.

Aside from traditional educational settings, Bachelor of Education graduates have the skills, knowledge and experience to work in private enterprise, government agencies and community service organisations. Graduates work in the state, independent and Catholic education sectors in both metropolitan and rural schools.
