Overview

This course is designed for those intending to become teachers in secondary schools. This double degree program includes teaching practice in schools, a major sequence and a minor sequence to qualify to teach in two discipline areas within secondary schools. A wide range of choices are available, such as English/Literature, History, Geography, Humanities, Studies of Religion, Religious Education, Psychology, Healthy Development, Business /Commerce, Mathematics, Music or Drama. ACU offers subjects at our Rome campus or students may elect to take a subject at one of our 85 educational partners around the world. An Education Studies sequence covers the key areas in learning and educational theory, as well as curriculum and teaching units in the selected specialist areas. Graduates may pursue a career in Catholic or other faith-based schools, government or independent secondary schools.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 1 and 2: satisfactory completion in two units (any study combination) of Maths: General Mathematics, Maths: Mathematical Methods or Maths: Specialist Mathematics or Units 3 and 4: any Mathematics; Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English as an Additional Language (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL.

Non-Year 12 prerequisites

Subject proficiency: As for year 12 or equivalent; The minimum selection rank for this course, is equivalent to an ATAR of 70.00.

Majors

Business Studies, Drama, English/Literature, History, Mathematics, Music, Study of Religions, Teaching (Secondary), Theological Studies.

Potential Career Outcomes

Graduates are eligible for teacher registration, and may seek employment in secondary schools in government, independent, Catholic and other faith-based schools, and also in institutes of technical and further education (TAFE), vocational education, community education centres, private colleges and inclusive education settings.
