Overview

Environmental engineering is where advances in science and technology are transformed into practical solutions that will protect and improve the quality of our environment. Environmental engineers are problem-solvers who design solutions to a range of hazards from airborne and waterborne diseases, water and air pollution, wastewater management and recycling. They implement environmental engineering law and assess the environmental impact of proposed projects. This degree is accredited by Engineers Australia at the level of professional engineer and is recognised internationally under the Washington Accord.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental) (Honours) has been designed to provide a strong foundation in both the theoretical and the practical aspects of engineering, particularly those relevant to the systematic development of environmental solutions and an awareness of social, economic, cultural and environmental aspects of engineering. This degree provides an ability to critically analyse and evaluate information and solve problems and an understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities and a commitment to them. This degree provides an extensive practical engineering work experience placement.

On completion of this degree students will be able to proficiently use professional skills and knowledge in the systematic development of complex environmental engineering solutions and demonstrate a broad understanding of the environmental engineering discipline. Students will apply their skills and knowledge in a professionally responsible manner and be able to communicate effectively with other engineers and the wider global community using a wide range of communication technologies. Students will develop engineering solutions appropriate to the social, political, international, economic and environmental contexts in which they are applied and engage in the process of continuing learning needed to retain the necessary level of professional skills and knowledge in the area of environmental engineering.

This degree prepares graduates for careers in teams with health professionals and medical specialists. Potential occupations may include environmental health, air pollution management and water supply engineer; potential employers may include building and construction companies, government agencies and universities.

Expand your career options by combining this degree with the Bachelor of Science (Environmental Science) (SATAC code 234271).

Combining degrees enables students to follow their interests and aspirations and enhance their career prospects by undertaking a second area of study in addition to their primary degree. Completing an approved combined degree option will normally add at least one extra year (full-time equivalent) to their studies. For example, students combining two three-year full-time equivalent degrees are normally able to complete both degrees in four years of full-time equivalent study. Students graduate with two degrees, expanding employment opportunities. For further information visit www.flinders.edu.au/combined-degrees.
