Civil engineers plan, design, construct and maintain structures and infrastructure built above and below ground such as roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, dams, water and wastewater plants, and buildings. Civil engineers use mathematical skills to analyse, design and troubleshoot problems. Strong project management, communication, leadership, critical thinking and leadership skills are required. The properties and use of concrete, steel, timber and soil, plus the physics and mechanics of large and small structures are studied. Students will also gain expertise in water supply systems, flood protection, sanitation, hydraulics and waste disposal. Civil engineers work in planning, consulting or design. Many civil engineering graduates work on construction sites, managing and supervising projects.

Graduates have the opportunity of working around the world as well as throughout Australia.
