The course aims to provide students with a comprehensive grounding in the core political science disciplines of international relations, politics and public policy and an understanding of Australia's political system and its place within the regional and global context.
Students will have the opportunity to explore political parties and institutions, interest groups and electoral systems, health and welfare policy, political theory, comparative politics and political economy, international political economy, globalisation, international relations theory, diplomacy, strategy and foreign policy, international terrorism, security studies and development studies.
On completion of this degree students will be able to formulate a sophisticated understanding of the central analytical concepts within the disciplines of politics, public policy and international relations and assess issues in international and domestic political contexts using specialist theoretical knowledge. Students will be able to evaluate and formulate policies, provide policy and political advice and analysis, and undertake research in the fields of political science and international relations and/or in pursuing further studies and determine effective ways of working independently and as a valuable member of a team, adapting to challenges in different workplace environments with confidence in professional and culturally aware ways.
This degree prepares graduates for a wide range of employment opportunities or further study. Potential occupations may include policy analyst, diplomat and research officer; potential employers may include government agencies and private sector businesses.
