Flinders University - Bedford Park Campus
Applicants who are registered nurses and hold a current practising certificate should apply through the SATAC postgraduate application service for entry into the Bachelor of Midwifery (Registered Nurse Entry) (SATAC code 2BP001).
Midwifery encompasses the autonomous and collaborative care of women, families and the community. Midwives are accountable and responsible professionals who provide support, care and advice to women before, during and after childbirth. The degree reflects the philosophy that midwifery is a profession in its own right. It will provide learning opportunities in order to prepare each graduate to function as a safe and competent woman-centred midwife able to meet the national Midwife standards for practice of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
This degree is for applicants with no previous formal midwifery qualifications and for enrolled nurses who would like to become eligible to apply to the Australian Heath Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a registered midwife.
Graduates will be adaptable to different models of care and contexts of practice and will be able to respond to changing health care needs and consumer demands.
Applicants who have applied on time but shuffle this preference after the 1 Dec 2023 will not be guaranteed equal consideration. Applicants who have applied on time will be required to have all pending or missing grades and/or adjustment factors finalised no later than 31 December 2023 to be guaranteed equal consideration.
Applicants are advised that should they receive an offer for a place in this degree they will be required to enrol in topics in the degree by the enrolment deadline stated in the letter of offer from SATAC. If they do not enrol via the Flinders University Student System by the specified date and maintain enrolment, their offer of a place in the degree will be forfeit. Applicants who receive an offer for a place in this degree should also note that if they subsequently receive an offer to a higher preference, their offer of a place in this degree will be deemed superseded and will also be forfeit.
This degree provides students with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary for them to demonstrate midwifery competencies and practise as registered midwives at the completion of the degree. Professional experience placements will be undertaken for the duration of the degree in agencies and hospitals in South Australia. Professional experience placements will include morning, afternoon, night, weekend and public holiday shifts and may be rostered at any time in the calendar year. Students must be able to undertake full-time block placements of up to six weeks in length and be prepared to undertake placements in rural venues. The Continuity of Care Experience will require students to provide care for individual women throughout their pregnancy and labour and in the post-natal period. This will require availability to attend appointments and be on-call for births.
Applicants are advised that midwifery is a profession that places considerable academic, physical and psychological demands on the individual. Prospective students who intend to apply for this course should carefully check that they meet the requirements listed in the 'Inherent Course requirements for the Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Midwifery' available at www.flinders.edu.au/study/courses/nursing-midwifery-inherent-requirements.
Under the terms of the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law (South Australia) Act 2010, nursing and midwifery students enrolled in a degree that provides a qualification for registration are required (as a condition of their enrolment at the University) to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia for the duration of their nursing/midwifery studies.
Students will be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia for the duration of study or clinical training, or until they are no longer enrolled in an approved degree.
On completion of this degree there is an opportunity to apply for a one-year Honours degree. For further information visit www.flinders.edu.au/study/courses/honours-bachelor-health-sciences.
