Overview

Embark on a career focused on the unique maternal needs and expectations of individual women. Compulsory professional practice in a variety of agencies will prepare you to practice confidently in a range of maternity settings. This is a comprehensive professional program that adopts a woman-centred approach to midwifery practice and patient-centred approach to nursing care.

This four-year course contains core studies in anatomy, physiology, social sciences and midwifery and nursing practice, as well as compulsory professional practice experience components undertaken in a variety of health care agencies. Professional practice placements involve morning, afternoon, night and weekend attendance, and may extend beyond the academic year.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English as an Additional Language (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL; Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in one of Biology, Chemistry, Health And Human Development, any Mathematics or Psychology.

Majors

Midwifery, Nursing.

Potential Career Outcomes

This qualification may lead to careers such as registered midwife, registered nurse, midwifery unit manager, nursing manager, clinical midwifery specialist or a clinical nurse specialist. Registered midwives can find work within hospitals, group practices and the community sector in antenatal, birthing and postnatal units. Nursing graduates can work in general practice, acute care, aged care, rehabilitation, mental health, palliative care and health education.
