Overview

Prepare to become a professional who can interpret and translate scientific knowledge into practical information to help people improve their health through diet. You will gain knowledge about the nature, management and prevention of diet-related diseases, and the social and psychological factors that influence what people eat.

This degree involves the study of food in relation to health and illness. Nutrition examines the role of food and nutrients in the metabolic and physiological processes of the body and dietetics is concerned with the prevention and treatment of a variety of food-related diseases. Dietitians/nutritionists interpret scientific knowledge about food in relation to health and translate it into practical information to help individuals and communities change their eating habits and improve health. They spend most of their time working with people, through education, counselling, advocacy or management. The degree equips graduates to practise as dietitians in a variety of settings, including hospital, public health, community and research settings. Applications are encouraged from people of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. Some scholarship support may be available.

This degree is accredited by the Dietitians Association of Australia and is recognised in Singapore, UK, New Zealand and Canada.

For applicants seeking an alternative nutrition-related qualification, please refer to the Bachelor of Human Nutrition (SATAC code 234841) or the Bachelor of Nutrition and Exercise (SATAC code 244921). Both courses can be used as a pathway to the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics (SATAC code 2CM093).

Applicants who have applied on time but shuffle this preference after the 1 Dec 2023 will not be guaranteed equal consideration. Applicants who have applied on time will be required to have all pending or missing grades and/or adjustment factors finalised no later than 31 December 2023 to be guaranteed equal consideration.

Applicants are advised that should they receive an offer for a place in this degree they will be required to enrol in topics in the degree by the enrolment deadline stated in the letter of offer from SATAC. If they do not enrol via the Flinders University Student System by the specified date and maintain enrolment, their offer of a place in the degree will be forfeit. Applicants who receive an offer for a place in this degree should also note that if they subsequently receive an offer to a higher preference, their offer of a place in this degree will be deemed superseded and will also be forfeit.
