Overview

Fast track your career to become a dietitian by studying La Trobe’s Bachelor of Nutrition Science and Master of Dietetic Practice course package.

You’ll study biosciences, food science, food policy, prevention of chronic disease and illness, food product development and nutritional needs over the lifespan. You’ll have the opportunity to specialise in an area you’re passionate about, including sports nutrition, food science and gastronomy, psychology, business entrepreneurship, project management and more. You’ll learn in commercial kitchens and modern science labs, and you’ll use specialised nutrition software to do dietary analysis.

Graduates who meet the entry requirements for the Master of Dietetic Practice can turn their background in nutrition science into specialised knowledge and skills.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL.

Non-Year 12 prerequisites

Subject proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.

Majors

Biochemistry, Dietetics (Master of Dietetic Practice only), Food science, Nutritional sciences, Physiology.

Potential Career Outcomes

Upon completion of the course package, you’ll be eligible to become an Accredited Practicing Dietitian. Dietetics graduates can find employment in patient/client care in hospitals, private practice and sport settings using medical nutrition therapy.

These career opportunities are in addition to those of a Bachelor of Nutrition Science graduate who can find employment in population or public health, government bodies, community health, food industry, research and media.
