Overview

This course is for those who prefer to work outdoors rather than in a cubicle.

The Bachelor of Outdoor Education combines environmental experiences (such as bushwalking, rock climbing, cross-country skiing and canoeing) with naturalist studies, preparing you for a career in outdoor and environmental education or adventure guiding.

You'll choose a major from either outdoor education or educational nature tourism. As part of your studies, you’ll explore natural history and the social and cultural aspects of the environment.

 With further study, you'll also be able to work as a qualified teacher in primary or secondary schools.

The outdoor education major includes at least 140 days of fieldwork in subjects focusing on bush environments, water environments, winter alpine environments, rock environments and naturalist studies.

The educational nature tourism major includes at least 80 days of practical work and elective studies from other disciplines.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL.

Non-Year 12 prerequisites

Subject proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.

Potential Career Outcomes

You’ll be prepared for careers in outdoor and environmental education services to schools, community environmental education, as national park guides, land and natural resources management, environmental interpretation for government or corporate sectors, sustainability and ecology community education, and nature tourism operations.

Complete a Master of Teaching (Primary or Secondary) and qualify to teach in areas like outdoor and environmental studies, geography, biology and humanities.
