The program includes the study of biology, chemistry and introductory pharmacy units in the first year, with a progressive emphasis on practical pharmacy experience in subsequent years. You may have the opportunity to undertake an international exchange.
Core studies in biology, chemistry, medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, pharmaceutics, pharmacology, pharmacy, pharmacy practice. In the final year you have the option to complete studies in either industrial pharmacy (consisting of an extended professional placement) or international pharmacy.
Community pharmacist (community practice), hospital pharmacist, industrial pharmacist, including drug production, marketing or drug development.
The Pharmacy Board of Australia requires graduates to complete 1,824 hours (one year) of supervised practical training followed by a registration examination. Graduates need to complete an approved Intern Training Program (ITP) during the supervised training year. The ITP can be undertaken as part of the Graduate Certificate in Pharmacy Practice offered by Pharmacy or by an independent provider.
The clinical experience program reflects the contemporary health care environment. Students undertake a two-week block placement during their third year and two, two-week block placements in their fourth year. By the end of their fourth year, all students have had at least three block placements in clinical experience. The block placements are carried out at hospital and community pharmacies, and include opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry, professional organisations and in rural health settings. The Australian Government subsidises the tuition fee for this course. The remaining balance is paid by the student. Current University of Sydney fee information.
