Overview

(Graduate program) This on-campus Graduate Honours course is offered at Hobart as a separate one-year (full-time) or two-year (part-time) course.

Honours consists of planning and conducting a research project leading to a thesis. Students who have an interest in research may undertake Graduate Honours either full or part-time following graduation. An Honours degree in Pharmacy enhances career opportunities and is the usual prerequisite for further study for a research higher degree (Master of Pharmacy or Doctor of Philosophy). Research Higher Degrees are generally expected for positions in the pharmaceutical industry, academia or government regulatory agencies.

Graduate Honours consists of a planning and conducting a research project under the supervision of academic staff at the Division of Pharmacy, School of Medicine. Students identify a suitable project and conduct a review of the scientific literature to provide a rationale for their project, develop a research plan with their supervisors, conduct the project and prepare a research thesis. Students participate in research skills tutorials and present regularly to their peers and academic staff as a part of the course.

Potential Career Outcomes

Honours students specialise in a particular field of study and at the same time are exposed to a range of opportunities for undertaking higher degrees and following careers in pharmacy practice or the pharmaceutical sciences. Choice of a particular Honours research topic does not mean that a student undertaking further studies (e.g. Masters or PhD) is required to continue in the same project area.

As a pharmacy graduate, the development of the profession of pharmacy over time will largely be determined by the health care roles and skills performed by pharmacists such as yourself and your colleagues. To enable pharmacy to continue to be a profession with value and standing within the community, best practice facilitated by research is paramount.
