Overview

Students of this course have the potential to undertake key roles in private industry, research organisations, and government departments.

By studying science and business management, you'll have the technical skills required of a practising scientist and the business skills to be an effective manager and leader – a highly attractive combination for employers.

The Biotechnology component of this course focuses on multidisciplinary knowledge and theoretical insights into biological molecules, processes, organisms, and the systems and interactions between them.

In first year, you'll explore core science concepts across physical, life, data and mathematical science. In your final year you'll be able to conduct a variety of field, research and laboratory investigations. You'll graduate with a solid theoretical background and hands-on skills in molecular cloning, gene technologies, disease treatment and prevention, drug production, food production, environmental sustainability and more.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL; Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in one of Maths: Mathematical Methods or Maths: Specialist Mathematics.

Non-Year 12 prerequisites

Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.

Potential Career Outcomes

The type of careers this qualification leads to may include roles in biosciences and biotechnology, including toxin testing in waterways, crop protection, diagnosing genes that cause cancer, among others, science education and journalism, scientific product marketing, teaching and research, management positions in relevant areas.
