Overview

As an RMIT Biotechnology and Biomedical Science student you will learn about how the human body functions and the responses of the body to various diseases, exercise, diet, internal disturbances and environmental influences.

You will complete studies in cell biology, physiology, microbiology and molecular biology and can also choose to study anatomy, neuroscience and cardiovascular biology.

You will learn how techniques in molecular biology and genetics are applied to problems including diagnosing genes that cause cancer, making crops and livestock less vulnerable to disease, and making food safer.

You will graduate with skills that will enable you to work in biotechnology and biomedical research.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English other than EAL or at least 30 in English as an Additional Language (EAL); Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in one of Maths: Mathematical Methods or Maths: Specialist Mathematics; Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in Chemistry.

Non-Year 12 prerequisites

Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.

Anatomy and physiology, Bioinformatics, Biomedical science, Biotechnology, Cell biology, Genetics.

Potential Career Outcomes

The type of careers this qualification leads to may include control of animal diseases, health promotion, human disease, molecular biology, production of vaccines, proteomics, quality control and research in genomics.
