The Bachelor of Science (Chemical Sciences) (Honours) will appeal to applicants who have the goal of completing an Honours year in this specialisation of science. Gain a broad-based foundation in chemistry and acquire extensive knowledge in the area. You will learn to understand and apply chemical principles to solve problems, master lab techniques and equipment, undertake chemistry research, communicate your findings, and develop an understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of chemistry and its role in society. This degree provides students with a broad-based foundation in chemistry discipline and allied areas. This degree also aims to develop a range of transferable research, analytical and communication skills including the capacity to understand and apply chemical principles to solve problems. This degree enables students to master the various laboratory techniques and instrumentation used in diverse chemical fields and to appreciate the multidisciplinary aspect of the discipline of chemistry and appreciate the role of chemistry in society, the regulatory framework within which it operates and the ethical issues it raises.

On completion of the degree students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of, and critically apply the theories, subject content, professional methodologies and research procedures relevant to the discipline of chemistry and demonstrate an understanding of materials and their properties at the atomic level, including an understanding of the intimate relationship between scale and size, nanostructure and the properties of materials. Students will be able to apply research skills appropriate to postgraduate research or advanced industrial investigation.

This degree is accredited by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute Incorporated.

This degree prepares graduates for employment in various workplaces including private and public global organisations. Potential occupations may include analytical and formulation chemist and laboratory metallurgical technician; potential employers may include wine and food companies, the pharmaceutical industry and research companies.
