Curtin University - Bentley
Medical Scientists are vital members of the healthcare team, performing clinical laboratory diagnostic procedures and conducting research essential for the diagnosis, treatment, understanding and prevention of disease. They analyse body fluids and tissues by physical, chemical, biochemical and biological methods, and contribute to procedures such as: blood transfusions and tissue transplants, diagnosis of infectious diseases and cancer, frontline detection of pandemics like H1N1 and diseases such as dengue fever and malaria, biochemical diagnosis of heart disease, and management of diseases like diabetes and haemophilia.
This four-year course offers exciting opportunities for students seeking challenging careers as professional medical scientists.
First year provides a general introduction to biomedical science, human anatomy and physiology and the health sciences in an interactive, inter-professional environment. Cellular and tissue aspects of pathology and the individual discipline area of laboratory medicine will be expanded in second year. In third and fourth year, students gain extensive field experience and focus on three of the major discipline areas of clinical biochemistry, haematology/blood transfusion science, histopathology, diagnostic cytology, medical microbiology and immunology.
High performing students in this course may be interested in applying for entry into the research Honours program following the fourth year of the course.
