Physiotherapy involves close collaboration with other members of the health care team in prevention and diagnosis of injury and disease, and the restoration of people to health, activity and their desired quality of life. Physiotherapists help people to relieve their pain, rehabilitate after injury, surgery or illness and assist people with disabilities to achieve maximum independence. This is a science-based course with a strong emphasis on problem solving and providing evidence-based interventions. However, as modern health professionals, physiotherapists must also be adept communicators, who understand the need to understand each individual and be able to build a strong therapeutic alliance with a diverse range of people.
It is a requirement of the physiotherapy program that all students participate fully in all laboratory and clinical activities to develop the professional skills essential to become competent practitioners. Students practise on one another and are assessed for their competence in manual handling skills before being permitted to move into patient care. This includes demonstrating the physical capacity to move and support dependent individuals in a safe and effective manner. Practical sessions throughout the four year program require disrobing to shorts and singlet or swim-suit equivalent in mixed gender classes. Students are expected to practise hands-on physiotherapy assessment and treatment techniques on both genders, and will personally experience these techniques which will be performed on them by other students and teaching staff. Opportunities for inter-professional learning will take place across the course.
Please note that, due to the competitive nature of the selection process, achieving the minimum ATAR is not a guarantee of admission to the course.
