Overview

The dual degree prepares you for contemporary Speech Pathology practice and contains foundation subjects that include psychology, public health, anatomy, physiology and linguistics. You will study with other speech pathology students as well as with students in other courses like psychology, social work, physiotherapy and teacher education so you learn important skills of working together. The course also contains compulsory discipline specific subjects that cover speech, language, voice, swallowing, fluency and multi-modal communication.

You will work in laboratories and simulated hospital wards to develop your knowledge and skills, and attend compulsory professional placements, undertaken in a variety of agencies such as schools and hospitals so you have lots of opportunity to learn the speech pathology practice.

To qualify as a speech pathologist, students must successfully complete both the Bachelor of Speech and Language Sciences and Master of Speech Pathology components.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English as an Additional Language (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL; Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in two of Biology, Chemistry, Health And Human Development, any LOTE, any Mathematics, Physics, Psychology, Sociology or Texts And Traditions.

Potential Career Outcomes

Work in private and public services including hospitals, health/mental/rehabilitation centres; care services (age, disability), education, (school, preschools, day care), disability, welfare (youth detention centres, prisons), occupational health and safety, and entertainment (professional voice users such as auctioneers, teachers, actors and singers). Other options include health promotion, policy development, teaching and research.
