Overview

Graduate in just 3 and a half years with Australia’s only accelerated Bachelor of Vision Science/Master of Optometry course, gaining the discipline-specific knowledge and skills to be work-ready and eligible to apply for registration as a practising optometrist in Australia and New Zealand. There is growing demand for qualified optometrists in regional and rural Australia; apply through our Regional and Rural Entry Scheme and help address the health gap between these communities and those living in urban centres.

In Deakin's Bachelor of Vision Science/Master of Optometry you will develop crucial skills in the clinical assessment treatment and management of eye and vision disorders with strong foundations in evidence-based and reflective practice, inter-professional collaborative practice and practice management. Clinical placements are a big focus-you will complete a variety of short-term industry placements and spend the final 6 months of the course as a student resident.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English as an Additional Language (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL.

Potential Career Outcomes

As an optometry graduate you will have a solid understanding of the optometric profession. You will be well prepared for employment in a range of work settings including hospitals, clinics, community and corporate settings, health services, non-government organisations, private practice, research institutes. Career opportunities include practice ownership, private and public eye care, and recognised special interests such as myopia control, dry eye management, low vision and paediatric vision.
