Overview

This course responds to community need for highly trained and skilled youth workers to work with young people. It is a program that provides students with theoretical insights and practical competencies. The focus of the course is on social justice and human rights. Committed to ethical practice and serving the common good, graduates will work as youth workers in dealing with the needs, problems and aspirations of young people in a variety of public and community-based settings. The areas of study include: building relationships and supporting young people, youth work in family and community settings, trauma informed practice, ethical principles and practices of young people as well as adolescent development. Students choose from electives in outdoor leadership, international studies, drama, the arts, psychology and theology. Lecturers are skilled youth workers and academics who are able to provide insight and knowledge, which allows for a dynamic educational setting.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English as an Additional Language (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL.

Non-Year 12 prerequisites

Subject proficiency: As for Year 12 or equivalent.
