Overview

This course aims to provide youth workers with practical management and leadership skills to help young people learn about themselves, others and society, through informal educational activities which combine enjoyment, challenge and learning. Youth Workers seek to promote young people’s personal and social development and enable them to have a voice, influence and place in their communities and society as a whole.

The course is well placed to train professionals who wish to work with young people to assist them to fulfil their potential. Students will increase their understanding of working with young people in community settings as well as acquire a sound knowledge of the structure and practices of the Youth Work industry. The course seeks to graduate students who have a critical awareness of the benefits of specialists in working with disadvantaged communities, in particular young people.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English as an Additional Language (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL.

Majors

Youth work.

Potential Career Outcomes

This course provides students with the knowledge and skills to work with young people in a range of community settings. It also has multiple employment exit points into schools, as graduates will be eligible to apply for entry to the Master of Teaching (Secondary Education), subject to meeting all entry requirements, or pursue a career in local government.
