Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours)

The Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) is an innovative and inspiring course for high-achieving students, offering an individually designed program in your chosen area of specialisation. You can choose any major and will also receive intensive research training, academic mentoring, and professional skills development; have the opportunity to learn a language and study abroad; and attend an on-campus residential experience.

Master of Translation Studies

Gain world-class specialised translation training at the largest language hub in WA. You’ll complete professionally endorsed (NAATI) translation training between English and one of eight Asian and European languages. Designed for graduates pursuing bilingual and multilingual careers, the Master of Translation Studies is taught by practitioners and translation researchers to help you develop a competitive edge in an increasingly globalised job market.

Specialisations

Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, French, German, Italian and Spanish

A Chinese interpreting specialisation is also available to students in combination with the English/Chinese language pair.

Professional Endorsement

The Master of Translation Studies is endorsed by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI), making students eligible to sit the NAATI test for Advanced Certified Translator or Certified Translator, upon completion of their master’s degree, and with no other prerequisites demanded by the accreditation body. The Chinese Interpreting specialisation leads graduates to the NAATI Certified Provisional Interpreter test. 


Prerequisites

Guaranteed ATAR: To be guaranteed entry into the Master of Translation Studies Assured Pathway via the Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours), you will require an ATAR/Selection Rank of 98.00. All students must satisfy the University of Western Australia’s English requirements. Progression rules from the Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) into the Master of Translation Studies also apply. 


Taking up your Assured Pathway Place in the Master of Translation Studies: In order to take up your 

In order to take up your Assured Pathway Place in the Master of Translation Studies you must meet the following prerequisites:

  • At least one major from our eight Asian and European languages available
  • Prerequisite subjects of your chosen major
  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree, with a UWA Weighted Average Mark of 65 per cent in the Level 3 units of a relevant major

You must confirm your intention to take up your place in the Master of Translation Studies in the year preceding your enrolment in the postgraduate course.

Your reserved place in the Master of Translation Studies will not be held indefinitely. We expect you to take up your place in the Master of Translation Studies in 2028 if you commence your four-year undergraduate degree in 2024.  


Deferral

You may defer your Assured Pathway place for one year, subject to the standard conditions of deferral. The timeline for taking up the reserved place in the Master of Translation Studies will start when you commence your undergraduate degree.
