Overview

The Productivity Commission's Inquiry into Mental Health (2020) estimated that mental illness is costing the Australian economy around $70 billion per year, with a further $150 billion per year of associated costs of disability and premature death due to mental illness. It's a staggering toll, but we can change this picture. That's why we've created a course designed for staff, team members, employees, volunteers, and leaders in every business and community group or organisation who want to promote mental health and wellbeing and reduce the likelihood of mental illness. We will build your understanding of the key issues, and equip you with practical tools to make informed decisions and implement effective strategies, support your own and others' wellbeing, and help build mentally healthy workplaces and communities.

The course will teach students to be literate on foundational concepts in mental health and wellbeing to inform decision-making and communication. They will be taught to understand mental health and wellbeing and how these are shaped by both person factors and organisational factors. Students will be able to implement powerful strategies to improve one's own and others' mental health and wellbeing, while practicing self-awareness and self-reflection to contribute to a mentally healthy workplace.

Graduates will develop mental health and wellbeing literacy, an ability to promote mental health and wellbeing, awareness of the needs of diverse populations regarding mental health and wellbeing, knowledge of managing risk appropriate to one's context and can work ethically and inclusively with others.
