The Undergraduate Certificate in Spanish aims to provides a sound, basic level of proficiency in Spanish within a curricular framework that fosters the development of linguistic and cultural competency of students and introduces students to a wide body of specific and cross-disciplinary knowledge relative to Spanish and the cultural practices, artistic expression, and composition of Hispanic societies. This course provides foundational cognitive and metacognitive training to enhance language acquisition and form broad conceptual understandings about languages and applied linguistics.
On completion of this program students will be able to communicate at a basic level of competence in Spanish, including obtaining and providing services and information and recognise the main socio-cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world. Students will be able to demonstrate general knowledge of cultural studies relative to Hispanic countries and have developed an understanding of language acquisition. Students will understand main theories and principles of language studies, and knowledge of current issues therein and be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in relation to inter-cultural communication and develop understanding and respect for cultural and linguistic diversity.
