Overview

Professional writing and editing is a practical, industry-focused course that nurtures creative potential while building versatile employment skills. It recognises that professional writers and editors need to be proficient in various writing forms across both print and electronic media. Students study the craft of writing fiction and non-fiction, the fundamentals of effective communication and editing, and related advanced word processing and design skills. 

In the Bachelor of Arts (Creative Writing), students develop practical and professional skills in creative writing, informed by critical, historical and theoretical knowledge of writing and literary communities, industries and career opportunities. These skills include the capacity to experiment, produce, critique creative writing in a variety of styles, techniques and voices. Students learn about character, structure, theme, language and visual storytelling to enable successful writing in numerous forms and genres.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in English other than EAL or at least 25 in English as an Additional Language (EAL).

Non-Year 12 prerequisites

Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.

The type of careers available upon completion of both qualifications may include editor or online editor, social media writer, journalist, broadcaster, publicity or communications officer, copywriter, project manager, author and publisher, events/festival manager with writing focus, screenwriter, screen producer.
