Overview

Are you interested in the birth of European civilisation? Classics, a specialisation offered in South Australia only at the University of Adelaide, explores the ancient Mediterranean worlds in-depth, focusing on Roman history and archaeology.

What will you do?

Our Bachelor of Arts (Classics) has a strong focus on teamwork, collaboration, and industry internships. You will:

  • study the art, society, politics, and thought of ancient Greece and Rome up to early medieval Europe
  • take on the exciting challenge of interpreting ancient texts and artefacts
  • read great works in translation, including mediaeval and Renaissance literature
  • experience historical research at an advanced level
  • learn basic Latin, which can help you master modern European languages like French, Spanish, and Italian.
In addition to Classics, our Bachelor of Arts program allows you to explore other interests by taking a minor (or another major) in a different discipline area. You can choose elective courses from the broadest range of study areas in the Arts in South Australia

Where could it take you?

You could be an archivist, a museum curator, a heritage consultant, or a documentarian. You might write a great epic that draws on your knowledge of ancient Greece. Perhaps you'll choose teaching, tourism, or translation.
