Overview

Students develop practical and professional skills in creative writing, informed by critical, historical and theoretical knowledge of writing and literary communities, industries and career opportunities. These skills include the capacity to experiment, produce and critique creative writing in a variety of styles, techniques and voices.

Students learn about character, structure, theme, language and visual storytelling to enable successful writing in numerous forms and genres, including digital, screen, graphic and performance formats. Students are given options to collaborate and problem solve locally and internationally with peers and industry partners through professional placements and work on student-led productions.

The broader learning experience is enhanced through focused studies in Approaches to Popular Culture, Asian Media and Culture, Cinema Studies, Contemporary Politics and Communication or Literary Studies, as well as a range of electives subjects.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 32 in any English.

Non-Year 12 prerequisites

Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.

Potential Career Outcomes

This qualification can lead to careers including writer, editor, publisher, events/festival manager with writing focus, screenwriter, screen producer.  It can also contribute to careers in education, communication, media, government and not-for profit sectors.
