Overview

Seeking inspiration? Look no further than Japan's innovative technology and vibrant pop culture - from their robotics and AI to anime and manga scenes. As the world's third-largest economy and a major trading partner with Australia, Japan also offers exciting business and career opportunities. With over 130 million Japanese speakers worldwide, learning the language will connect you to a world of new experiences.

What will you do?

Our Bachelor of Arts (Japanese Studies) has a strong focus on teamwork, collaboration, and industry internships. You will:

  • learn to speak, read and write Japanese
  • develop an understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture
  • improve your knowledge of how language works
  • study Japanese influence in modern society
  • attend an intensive Japanese in-country summer school in Kyoto
One-semester or one-year exchange study opportunities are available with our Japanese partner universities to extend your Japanese proficiency and deepen your understanding of the culture and society.

In addition to Japanese Studies, our Bachelor of Arts program allows you to explore other interests by taking a minor (or another major) in a different discipline area. You can choose elective courses from the broadest range of study areas in the Arts in South Australia.

Where could it take you?

You could be a creative director, a diplomat, or a journalist in Tokyo. You might work in international business, helping companies with communication and cultural understanding. Perhaps you're interested in research, teaching, tourism, or translation.
