Overview

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical) provides a guaranteed* pathway into the Doctor of Medicine (Rural Pathway) offered by the University of Melbourne in Shepparton for regional students intending to practise medicine in a regional area.

At our regional campuses in Bendigo and Albury-Wodonga you'll learn about the human body, its structure and its functions. This includes understanding how disease manifests and how drug strategies are used to treat disease.

You’ll learn:
  • Practical skills needed to explore the underlying molecular basis of acute and chronic illnesses
  • How to apply biomedical research
  • How to convey scientific and biomedical science information.

*The University of Melbourne guarantees students who graduate from the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical) with a 70 weighted average mark (WAM) a place in the Doctor of Medicine in Shepparton. A continued commitment to country living whilst completing the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical) is also required.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL.

Biomedical science.

Potential Career Outcomes

After completing the 4-year Doctor of Medicine (Rural Pathway) followed by pre-vocational (internship) and vocational training (minimum of 3 years but up to 7 years), you will be qualified to practise as a medical practitioner, with a specialisation depending on vocational training. It is expected that you will practise in a regional location.

If you don’t proceed to the Doctor of Medicine, you’ll graduate prepared for roles in the biomedical, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.
