Overview

This innovative double degree will enable you to complete a Bachelor of Biomedical Science in the Faculty of Health and a Master of Data Analytics offered by the Faculty of Science in four years (full-time). The degree is designed to produce biomedical science graduates with advanced skills in data analytics and will enable you to fast-track your qualifications.

The complexity of the human body, modern lifestyle diseases and emerging medical treatments call for graduates with diverse skill sets. The application of bioinformatics, computer science and mathematical statistical modelling continues to have a major impact on research in the biomedical sciences. The combination of these two separate but complementary study areas will be at the forefront of developments in our understanding of public health, the causes of disease and the development of new approaches to treatment.

In the Bachelor of Biomedical Science you will gain knowledge of a wide range of biomedical disciplines and use these as the foundation for the development of more advanced theoretical and practical skills in specialised biomedical science areas such as genomics, molecular biology, virology, microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, anatomy and physiology. In the final semester you start studying advanced biomedical data analytics.

For the final 1 year of the program you will articulate to the Master of Data Analytics where you will continue to develop both knowledge and skills in advanced biomedical data analytics. These include data mining methods, modern biomedical technologies, software system development and research methodologies. As a graduate you will have significant project-based experience and developed high-order thinking strategies that allow you to apply data analytical skills to solve complex problems in biomedical research applications and health care.

Potential Career Outcomes

There is a clear demand for biomedical science graduates with advanced skills in data analytics. The application of these quantitative approaches is at the forefront of developments in our understanding of public health, the aetiology of disease and the development of new approaches to treatment. With increased demands upon the health system, a digital transformation is underway to provide better quality and efficiency of healthcare, better population health and an improved overall patient experience. Graduates of the Bachelor of Biomedical Science will have multiple career opportunities depending on their chosen areas of specialisation. These include biomedical research; clinical science positions such as neurophysiologist or cardiac scientist; health organisations employing laboratory, administrative and/or management professionals; commercial and business entities that employ agents for biobusiness development, investment analysis, medical and biotechnology sales and marketing representatives, contract research, clinical trials; consultants in regulatory affairs and matters of compliance; government agencies in Science and Health; educational fields such as laboratory technician/technical officer, tertiary educator, medical illustrator or writer; postgraduate study in Medicine, Veterinary Science, Allied Health and Education.
