Overview

Embark on an exciting career in the emerging field of dermal science. Dermal clinicians play an integral and unique role in the management of a variety of skin conditions and disorders by providing non-surgical procedures to assist with both acute and chronic conditions. The Bachelor of Dermal Sciences provides students with the underpinning scientific knowledge and practical skills required to safely and effective manage:
  • Skin changes associated with chronic health problems or side effects of treatment
  • Ageing/sun damage and preventative treatment
  • Skin conditions and disorders
  • Pigment changes
  • Vascular concerns
  • Wounds, scars and swelling
  • Hair reduction or hair loss
  • Tattoo removal

Throughout the course students will undertake clinical training in a variety of settings, including the VU Dermal Clinic. Dermal procedures taught include skin assessment, laser and light based treatments, resurfacing procedures, electrotherapies, and wound and oedema management.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English as an Additional Language (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL.

Majors

Dermal sciences.

Potential Career Outcomes

Graduates of this program can enter the workforce as dermal therapists or dermal clinicians.
