Overview

Do you want to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children? This course is for individuals who are passionate about education, enjoy working with children, and aspire to make a positive impact.

This qualification enables you to work in a range of primary and early childhood education settings. Students learn the knowledge and skills necessary to become an effective primary teacher and early childhood educator. Students build a solid foundation in educational theory and contemporary approaches to teaching and learning in both primary and early education settings.

Students also complete a minimum of 120 days supervised placement in school environments and in birth to 35-month and before school (3-5 years) settings. Subjects center around primary and early childhood teaching, promoting literacy and numeracy, an appreciation of diversity, evidence-based decision making and reflective practice.

Prerequisites

Year 12 prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English other than EAL or at least 30 in English as an Additional Language (EAL); Units 1 and 2: satisfactory completion in two units (any study combination) of Maths: General Mathematics, Maths: Mathematical Methods or Maths: Specialist Mathematics or Units 3 and 4: any Mathematics.

Non-Year 12 prerequisites

Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.

Potential Career Outcomes

Possible career pathways include teaching in primary schools, early learning centres in schools, kindergartens, childcare centres, informal education settings, and industry and government sectors. In addition to being a teacher, you may also work as an education administrator, curriculum developer, educational consultant, private tutor or instructional designer. You will have skills, knowledge and experience to work in private enterprise, government agencies and community service organisations.
