Overview

Take a pathway that allows high-achieving students to complete a program of study in mechanical and biomedical engineering in only five years. You will study a variety of areas including dynamics, engineering design, biomechanics and biomedical instrumentation. The final year includes studies in advanced mechanical design and innovations in medical devices, allows for further elective topics to be chosen, and includes a masters thesis. This degree is accredited by Engineers Australia at the level of professional engineer and is recognised internationally under the Washington Accord.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) (Honours)/Master of Engineering (Biomedical) has been designed to provide a strong understanding of both the theoretical and the practical aspects of engineering, particularly those relevant to the systematic development of biomechanical engineering systems and an awareness of social, economic, cultural and environmental aspects of mechanical and biomedical engineering. This degree includes structured engineering work experience and the ability to undertake a substantial research-oriented project.

The degree provides the foundations that will underpin ongoing professional development, preparing graduates for further study or for a career in an engineering related field or in other areas where the range of skills and knowledge acquired is needed or desirable.

On completion of this degree students will be able to proficiently use professional skills and knowledge in the systematic development of complex biomechanical systems and demonstrate a broad understanding of the mechanical and biomedical engineering disciplines and a deeper understanding of some areas of biomechanical engineering. Students will be able to develop engineering solutions appropriate to the social, political, economic and environmental contexts in which they are applied and apply skills adopted through the thesis and advanced discipline topics to postgraduate level research or advanced industrial investigation.

This degree prepares graduates for a career as a professional engineer. Potential occupations may mechanical engineer and process development scientist; potential employers may include mining companies, building services and the automotive industry.
