Overview

Prepare yourself for a rewarding career in optometry in a high-quality learning environment. You will receive a grounding in the fundamentals of science with an emphasis on vision science, where you will study the visual system and factors that influence sight, in preparation for intensive study and clinical experience in optometry. Be taught by our lecturers in state-of-the-art facilities, learning diverse topics across science, health and optometry. This degree is accredited by the Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand. Graduates will be eligible to register as optometrists.

This double degree aims to provide students the skills and knowledge required to be health scientists who are specialists in vision science. Students will gain the skills necessary to provide vital optometry services to the community. Students will undertake study in fundamental sciences and fields of health science that underpin optometry, followed by studies in visual sciences and optometry. This includes studies in the fundamentals of the eye and vision and practical training in optometric practice. Students will be provided with the knowledge and clinical skills to identify and treat eye dysfunction and diseases and to perform common diagnostic and therapeutic optometric procedures.

Applicants are advised that should they receive an offer for a place in this degree they will be required to enrol in topics in the degree by the enrolment deadline stated in the letter of offer from SATAC. If they do not enrol via the Flinders University Student System by the specified date and maintain enrolment, their offer of a place in the degree will be forfeit. Applicants who receive an offer for a place in this degree should also note that if they subsequently receive an offer to a higher preference, their offer of a place in this degree will be deemed superseded and will also be forfeit.

Applicants who have applied on time but shuffle this preference after the 1 Dec 2023 will not be guaranteed equal consideration. Applicants who have applied on time will be required to have all pending or missing grades and/or adjustment factors finalised no later than 31 December 2023 to be guaranteed equal consideration.
